Part I – The Early Hands
Part II – The Hand in Crisis
Part III – Tywin the Great?
Part IV – Two Honest Men
Part V – Tyrion Lannister
A Tywin Lannister theory:
Tywin is smart and strategic yet he never appears too concerned about a Targaryen returning to power, this is inconsistent with everything we know about him. What if Tywin had switched baby Aegon with another child, before giving Gregor the order to kill, and make sure the corpse would be impossible to recognize. By keeping Aegon secretly alive he would have had insurance in case things didn’t turn out well after Robert’s rebellion, a hostage if necessary, and if the surviving Targaryen children should try to reclaim the throne in the future he had the rightful heir under his control.
I highly doubt it. I think Aegon isn’t concerned, because he made sure that the King, the Crown Prince, and most of the rest of the House were dead. All that they have left is two pretenders with no base of power. Why should he worry?
His decision would have been made at the time of the sack of King’s Landing, no one knew which way things would go, or if and when the surviving Targaryens would try to return (they did have some supporters at the time). Tywin had everything to gain by keeping Aegon secretly alive and nothing to lose.
Many years later, during his last period as Hand of the king, given the discontent and turmoil in many parts of Westeros and the widespread rumors that Robert’s heirs were bastards, he should have been worried about the support a Targaryen claimant to the throne could obtain. It just doesn’t make sense to me that he, an experienced clever man, would ignore that possible threat, unless he had a backup plan.
But people did know – the rebels had won, Rhaegar was dead, and Tywin needed to get in good with the new regime.
Keeping Aegon alive would have been totally counter to the rest of Tywin’s actions.
You said you had another e-book coming on Tywin’s second turn as Hand of the king-when can we expect that?
BTW LOVE this series!
An essay not an ebook. Did I? Hmmm….I could do one, certainly.
uh, you said e-book in the comments, section, but essay rather is just fine with me!
The ebook is an essay about Machiavellianism throughout the series, not specifically on Tywin although he is a case study.
But I still can’t wait to read part VI…
[…] Hands of the King […]
Are the essays on Tywin Jon Arryn & Tyrion still being written? I don’t see them
No, they’re done.
Tywin is Part III, Jon Arryn is Part IV, Tyrion is Part V.
Are you planning to update this with World Book info? Granted I have not red it so I do not know how much relevant info is there but I know there is a lot about Tywin at least. Altough updating essays must be more dull than writing new ones 🙂
