RFTIT Tumblr Roundup, Vacation Edition

Hello from Shakespeare's Globe!

Hello from Shakespeare’s Globe!

Hey folks, I’m writing to you from London, where I’ve been kept very busy with trips to the sights (Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament), the theater district of the West End, and various museums.

But in the mean-time, I’ve been able to answer some Tumblr questions, so here we go:

Glad to see you’re enjoying London.

    I’m jealous!

Great insights all especially on Maidenpool and the duties of being a lady.

Historically speaking a Queen Consort had many, MANY important responsibilities…but we’re not seeing it here as much because *Cersei* wasn’t doing her duties the way Sansa or Margaery would.

    • Yeah, I needed to spend more time on that one.

The UK was great. Unexpectedly good weather, lots of theater, museums, the sights, etc.

Agreed on the duties of a lady. I wonder how much the fact that we see Cersei doing jack-diddly on that front has to do with how much she hated the job, OR it was something that GRRM didn’t quite flesh out. Watsonian or Doylist?

What is different about Cersei, that applied to absolutely NO other queen ever I think, was that she didn’t have a whole bunch of ladies-in-waiting. You’d think that high lords would be eager to place sisters or daughters in the queen’s household, as they were in the real Middle Ages and Renaissance. It was an honor to be a lady-in-waiting, and these women could do a lot to advance their families’ fortunes even if it didn’t involve sleeping with a king, ha! Normally, Cersei would probably have her Aunt Genna and various Lannister cousins in her retinue, at least. Maybe she didn’t want them around so she could boink Jaime on the sly and couldn’t risk a Nosy Parker finding out?

Margaery and Arianne and their households of women were the rule not the exception. Sansa should have had more than just Jeyne as her attendant, and Myrcella more than her septa and one maid. Definitely Catelyn should never have traveled alone without at least one woman servant/attendant. I think it might have been something that GRRM wasn’t paying much attention to, what with ice zombies, dragons and all.

    Hi Steve,

I live in London myself and would strongly recommend the museum of London, it’s lesser known than some others but brilliant.

Btw I really enjoy this site, it seems you know more about our country’s history than most English people! Cheers

    • Wanted to go to the Museum of London – it’s one of my favorites – but we got the day wrong on when we were flying back, so we scheduled it for the day we didn’t actually have.

In London during England’s spirit Summer, nicely timed. Enjoy yourself, you deserve it!
